Position Description
Data Engineer (Microsoft Fabric)
Mid-Level  |  Permanent  |  Sydney, NSW

About the Business
This is a well-established Australian data and analytics consultancy with a presence across Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, New Zealand and Singapore. The business works with enterprise clients across financial services, government, utilities, transport and higher education, helping them design, build and get real value from their data platforms.

The consultancy holds strong partnerships with Microsoft, Databricks and OpenAI, and is recognised as one of the leading Microsoft Fabric practices in the region. The team is known for working with emerging technology seriously, not just as a sales pitch, and invests meaningfully in building internal IP alongside client delivery work.

This role forms part of the growth of their Sydney practice. It is not a backfill. The business is expanding its data engineering capability in response to client demand and an internal push to deepen its Fabric expertise.

The Role

As a Data Engineer, you will work across a mix of client-facing delivery engagements and internal platform and accelerator development. You will be embedded in a team of consultants who take quality seriously, and you will be expected to contribute to both the technical and client-facing dimensions of project work.

This is a role for someone who wants to work with modern tooling in a consultancy environment, build strong client relationships, and grow their career in a business that is genuinely invested in your development.

Key Responsibilities

Data Engineering and Delivery

  • Design, build and maintain data pipelines and data models using Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouse, Data Factory, and Spark-based compute
  • Develop and manage data transformation logic using dbt or equivalent frameworks within Fabric workspaces
  • Work across OneLake, Delta Lake, and Fabric shortcuts to design scalable and efficient data architectures
  • Build and maintain Azure-based infrastructure supporting data platform workloads, including Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, and Azure Databricks where required
  • Write clean, well-documented, production-grade code with a strong emphasis on maintainability and reusability
  • Contribute to the development of internal accelerators, templates and reusable assets that improve delivery speed across the practice

Stakeholder Management and Communication

  • Engage directly with client stakeholders to understand data requirements, translate business needs into technical solutions, and communicate progress clearly
  • Facilitate working sessions and workshops with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Produce documentation and technical specifications that are clear and accessible to a range of stakeholders
  • Build trusted relationships with client teams, acting as a reliable point of contact throughout delivery
  • Escalate issues and risks in a timely and constructive manner, keeping project leads and clients informed

Quality and Continuous Improvement

  • Apply best practice principles around testing, version control (Git), CI/CD and code review
  • Contribute to internal knowledge sharing, team retrospectives and practice-building initiatives
  • Stay current with the Microsoft Fabric roadmap and broader data engineering trends, and bring relevant insights back to the team

What We Are Looking For

Technical Skills

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric or a strong Azure data engineering background with a clear interest in transitioning into Fabric
  • Solid proficiency in Python and SQL
  • Experience with Azure services including Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Lake Storage, and Azure Databricks
  • Familiarity with data modelling concepts including medallion architecture, star schema, and dimensional modelling
  • Experience with version control (Git) and working within CI/CD pipelines
  • Exposure to dbt or similar transformation frameworks is advantageous

Consulting and Interpersonal Skills

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt your style for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stakeholder relationships in a professional services or consulting environment
  • Comfortable working in client-facing roles and representing the business with confidence and credibility
  • Organised and self-directed, with the ability to manage your own workload across multiple concurrent engagements
  • A collaborative approach and genuine interest in contributing to a high-performing team

Experience

  • 3 to 6 years of experience in a data engineering or analytics engineering role
  • Consultancy or professional services experience is advantageous but not essential
  • Relevant Microsoft certifications (DP-203, DP-600 or equivalent) are a plus

What Is On Offer

  • Work at the cutting edge of the Microsoft data stack, including early access to emerging Fabric capabilities
  • A genuine mix of client delivery and internal IP and accelerator development
  • A collaborative team culture with a strong emphasis on quality and continuous learning
  • Clear career pathways within a growing consultancy with a national and regional footprint
  • Flexibility and autonomy in how you manage your work
