Data Analytics Engineer | Contract | Sydney

My client is a consultancy providing resources for a privately owned infrastructure operator in the NSW ports and logistics sector, backed by a consortium of major Australian institutional investors. They manage key import and export gateways and intermodal freight assets, and they are building out their data and analytics capability to support self-service reporting and future AI initiatives.

They are looking for a Data Analytics Engineer to join the Data Analytics & BI team on a short-term contract, reporting to the Lead of Data Analytics & BI.

Location: Sydney (on site, driver's licence and car required)
Contract: 4 months (initial term)
Reports to: Lead, Data Analytics & BI (no direct reports)

The role
You will design and deliver modern data solutions that support decision making and self-service analytics across the business. The work covers advanced SQL, data quality, data cataloguing, semantic modelling and enterprise Power BI dashboards, with a strong focus on usability and design.

Key responsibilities

  • Write and optimise SQL queries to extract, transform and model data for analytics, reporting and future AI use cases
  • Build and maintain high-performance Power BI datasets, semantic models and interactive dashboards, connecting to SQL Server, SharePoint, Excel and APIs
  • Perform data profiling, implement data quality rules and maintain data quality metrics
  • Build data catalogue tools, data mapping and technical data quality checks
  • Establish consistent business definitions, metrics and data standards
  • Produce documentation covering lineage, transformation logic, calculations and user guides to support handover and knowledge sharing
  • Streamline reporting workflows to reduce manual effort, including automated reporting and alerts
  • Support the preparation of AI-ready datasets and business metadata
  • Work with stakeholders from technical teams through to senior leadership to gather requirements, present insights and train business users

Essential skills and experience

  • 5 to 7 years in relevant data analytics roles
  • Strong Power BI and MS SQL experience, including data modelling, DAX, calculation groups, visual design and publishing
  • Proficiency in data profiling, SQL and data validation
  • Experience delivering automated reporting, alerts, and report UX/UI and dashboard design
  • Understanding of data governance and documentation best practice
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with strong attention to detail
  • Tertiary degree in data analysis, supply chain or a similar field

  • Supply chain or logistics experience
  • Microsoft Purview
  • Azure Synapse and Microsoft Fabric
  • Azure Storage and Azure SQL
  • Data warehousing, data lakes, Medallion architecture and ETL/ELT
  • SQL Server data warehouse and Synapse data lake environments
