The opportunity

The Legal Counsel - Construction Industry provides legal support and strategic advice on all aspects of construction projects. This role focuses on contract management, regulatory
compliance, risk mitigation, and dispute resolution across the project lifecycle. The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, procurement teams, and senior leadership to ensure legal integrity and commercial success.

Key responsibilities may include (but not limited to) the following:
  • Draft, review, and negotiate construction-related contracts, including head contracts, subcontracts, consultancy agreements, and supplier contracts.
  • Maintain legal and compliance registers.
  • Support dispute preparation, claims, and legal research.
  • Assist in maintaining legal templates and internal guidance.
  • Support policy, risk and governance strategies and frameworks.
  • Advise on contract interpretation, variations, claims, and extensions of time.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable building regulations, licensing requirements, and workplace health and safety laws.
  • Provide guidance on security of payment legislation, including progress claims and adjudication processes.
  • Identify legal risks and develop mitigation strategies for ongoing and upcoming projects.
  • Liaise with external legal advisors, regulators, and industry stakeholders as required.
  • Support incident investigations and regulatory reporting obligations.
  • Review and advise on insurance policies and claims.
  • Deliver legal training and guidance to internal teams.

About you
  • Admitted Australian lawyer with 3–5 years PQE in construction, infrastructure, or major projects
  • Exposure to construction, commercial, or litigation work preferred
  • Soft skills:
    • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
    • Strong drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
    • Commercially focused with the ability to balance legal and business considerations.
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
    • High attention to detail and problem-solving capability.
