Senior Data Scienctist | Perm | Melbourne | Utilities

Background

Our client is a growing data and AI consultancy focused on delivering long-term value through advanced analytics, machine learning, and data-driven solutions. By combining diverse datasets, domain expertise, and modern technology platforms, they help organisations solve complex operational and strategic challenges.

Approximately 18 months ago, our client expanded into Melbourne, drawn by the city's central role in Australia's energy transition and the opportunity to support critical infrastructure initiatives. Since then, they have partnered with several leading utility providers across the Asia-Pacific region, delivering projects that place data engineering, machine learning, and AI at the heart of infrastructure modernisation.

With demand continuing to grow, our client is expanding its local team and seeking talented individuals who are passionate about applying data science to solve real-world challenges.

Why Join?

Our client combines the technical depth of a high-performing data science and engineering team with access to large-scale, real-world operational challenges. Their teams work across industries including utilities, infrastructure, telecommunications, and retail, helping organisations unlock value from data through advanced analytics and AI.

They work on technically ambitious projects using leading cloud and data platforms, including Databricks, and have successfully delivered both machine learning and generative AI solutions into production environments. Team members have the opportunity to work on impactful projects, collaborate with highly skilled peers, and contribute to solving meaningful business and societal challenges.

How are they making an impact?

In one project, our client helped a major electricity distributor predict which local transformers were most at risk of overload. By using data from a limited number of monitored transformers and combining it with contextual information such as location and customer type, they were able to estimate demand across the wider network without requiring costly sensor installation. This enabled the organisation to prioritise maintenance activities, reduce the risk of equipment failure, and deliver significant infrastructure cost savings.

Role Overview
  • Collaborate hands-on with leading utility providers in electricity, gas, and water to solve operational challenges and help shape the future of essential services.
  • Join a high-performing team of data scientists and engineers using high-frequency telemetry, geospatial data, asset registries, and operational logs to generate insights that drive the modernisation of critical infrastructure.
  • Work with cutting-edge technologies including Databricks, machine learning, and generative AI (e.g. autonomous agents) to design and deploy innovative data-driven solutions.
Key Responsibilites
  • Tackle complex business and operational problems by applying analytical thinking, domain understanding, and machine learning techniques to deliver measurable value.
  • Collaborate within a growing cross-functional team of data engineers, product managers, and visualisation specialists to design scalable, data-driven solutions and contribute to building strong team practices.
  • Develop robust, production-ready code and ML pipelines using modern DevOps practices, including Git, CI/CD, automated testing, and agile workflows.
  • Contribute ideas that help shape the organisation's AI and machine learning capabilities and strategy across multiple industries.
  • Explore and implement classical and generative AI approaches to build innovative, practical solutions addressing emerging client needs.
Benefits
Our client offers the stability of an established and growing business combined with the agility and innovation of a specialist data and AI team. Team members benefit from exposure to large-scale, impactful projects while working in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Benefits include:
  • Learning and development budget for certifications and courses
  • Hybrid work policy, providing flexibility between office collaboration and remote work
  • Competitive salary
  • Access to leading cloud, data, and AI platforms
  • Ongoing support for learning new technologies, including generative AI and machine learning frameworks
  • Inclusive, collaborative team culture with regular team events and knowledge-sharing opportunities.
