The opportunity
The Senior Legal Counsel - Construction is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing all legal aspects of construction and infrastructure projects. This position provides high-level legal advice to executive leadership, manages complex contractual and regulatory matters, and leads dispute resolution strategies. The role requires deep expertise in construction law, strong commercial acumen, and the ability to influence business outcomes in a fast-paced project environment.
Key responsibilities may include (but not limited to) the following:
- Draft, review, and negotiate complex head contracts, subcontracts, and supplier agreements. Negotiation of complex construction agreements, including EPC, design & construct, PPP, joint venture, and major subcontract arrangements. Oversee contract administration issues, including variations, delay claims, extensions of time, and liquidated damages.
- Support claims strategy, notices, adjudications, and dispute resolution
- Provide legal advice on statutory regimes relevant to construction and infrastructure
- Develop and implement legal risk management frameworks across projects and business units.
- Partner with Commercial and Project teams to resolve contractual issues proactively
- Contribute to internal legal training and knowledge sharing
- Manage high-value and complex disputes, including adjudication, mediation, arbitration, and litigation.
- Admitted Australian lawyer with 5–8+ years PQE in construction, infrastructure, or major projects
- Soft skills:
- Strong drafting, negotiation, and dispute experience
- Advanced contract drafting and negotiation expertise.
- Strong leadership and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Ability to communicate legal advice clearly to non-legal stakeholders
- Strategic thinking with a proactive approach to risk management.
- Excellent dispute resolution and problem-solving skills.
- High level of commercial awareness and decision-making ability.
- Ability to operate effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.
- Proven experience handling complex, high-value construction contracts and disputes.
